What causes black streaks on your roof
The streaks are an algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles, so it spreads down the slope where the water runs.
Mid-Missouri gives it what it needs. Humid summers, damp springs and shade from big oaks and maples keep north slopes wet long after the south side dries.
That is true on older streets in Jefferson City and Holts Summit. It is also true for our power washing in Columbia, and at Lake of the Ozarks homes that sit empty for weeks.

How we clean a roof without damaging it
- First, we protect your plants. Everything that comes off the roof runs down the eaves.
- Next, the cleanser goes on at low pressure. We use our own formulated cleansers, never a pressure blast.
- Then we wait. Dwell time lets the cleanser break down the algae.
- Finally, we rinse. The roof gets a full rinse, and so do your plants.
Why not pressure wash it? Shingles hold a layer of granules, and hard spray can knock them loose or push water under the edges. That is why every roof we clean gets a soft wash, and we have done 250+ roof cleanings since 2013.

Roof cleaning for shingle, clay tile and flat roofs
Each roof type cleans a little differently. So here is what to expect.
| Roof | What you see | How we clean it | What sets the bid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingle | Dark streaks down the slope, plus green growth where it stays shaded. | Soft wash, dwell time, then a full rinse. | Roof size, steepness and how heavy the growth is. |
| Clay tile | Dirt and organic growth that varies from roof to roof. | The same soft wash. But tile is not walked like shingle, so the crew plans access first. | Tell us it is tile and which kind. |
| Flat membrane | Dirt and film on a TPO or EPDM commercial roof. | The manufacturer's written cleaning method comes first. | See commercial roof cleaning for TPO and EPDM. |
Metal, wood shake or slate? Call or text and describe it. Then we will tell you straight if it is a job we take.
When to call a roofer before roof cleaning
A wash fixes a dirty roof, but it does not fix a damaged one. So check from the yard first.
- Bare, smooth patches. That is worn shingle, not a stain, so cleaning will not put it back.
- Curled, cracked or missing shingles. Fix those first, then decide if a wash still makes sense.
- Stains on a ceiling or a damp attic. If water gets in, call a roofer before anyone sprays anything.
The same shade that streaks a roof also greens a north wall and fills the gutters. So house washing and gutter cleaning pair well with a roof wash.
